The Thanksgiving Hoopfest 2020 Recap

The 2020 Thanksgiving Hoopfest hosted by Glenn Smith was really exciting to watch and loaded with some of the top players in the state of Texas and also the Country. In this article I will be recapping the prospects that stood out to me from the Saturday Night Event:

Player Recaps

Dorien Goodman • PG • Lancaster • 2022

The speedy point guard, put a lot of pressure on the John Paul II defense by using his speed and quickness to blow by defenders and using his vision/passing instincts to find his open teammates.

Wade Taylor • PG • Lancaster • 2021

The Texas A&M Commit displayed to spectators last night why he is one of the most dynamic guards in the country. He consistently blew by his man and was able to get to the rim at will and made some nifty dimes in transition and also in the half court.

Elijah Hughey • SG • Lancaster • 2021

The smooth shooting guard came off the bench for the Tigers but he was prepared as soon as he entered the game and his shots were falling from all dimensions.

Markeis Sykes • PF • Lancaster • 2022

Sykes is a tough nosed forward that does all of the little things on the floor. Yesterday he was making an impact in a handful of ways, by taking charges, grabbing rebounds, talking on defense and making the hustle plays.

Jaylon Tyson • SF • John Paul II • 2021

The Four-Star Texas Tech Commit was huge down the stretch and very pivotal in his teams win over a very scrappy and athletic Lancaster team. Tyson scored on all levels in a very efficient and effortless manner.

Manny Obaseki • G • John Paul II • 2021

The Texas A&M commit Obaseki was very impressive in the win over Lancaster and the combination guard attacked the rim relentlessly by using his athleticism, tempo and pace to get to the third level. He also knocked down a couple of jumpers off the bounce which was very refreshing to see. Obaseki‘s play thus far this season has been spectacular I believe he deserves his fifth star.

Cameron Brown • SG • John Paul II • 2021

Brown may not get as much publicity as a few of his other teammates but yesterday the dead eye shooter was money from the behind the arc.

Cameron Corhen • PF • John Paul II• 2022

The light switch for Corhen has looked as if it has turned on for the 6ft.9 Plano Texas four man. Corhen stretched the floor and showed touch from the outside as well as score around the rim and snatching rebounds in traffic. If he continues his play, I expect for him to be a top 150 nationally ranked prospect in the near future.

Nick Kendall • SG • John Paul II • 2021

Kendall possesses a good shooting stroke to go along with his size in basketball IQ. He currently has a few Division III offers but I expect for more to surface soon for the 6ft.5 Shooting Guard.

Emoni Bates • SF • Ypsi Prep • 2022

The number one prospect in the nation for 2022 was as good as advertised and he made plays offensively that were next level. He is long, wiry strong, super skilled and range on his jumpshot and is equipped to score in a list of ways. Duncanville made it extremely hard for Bates to score but the Five-Star was still able to finish with a game high 28 points.

Jaden Akins • PG • Ypsi Prep • 2021

Akins had the ball on a string and got where he needed off the dribble to score or facilitate. Tom Izzy is getting a talented point guard who will help the Spartans when a lot of games when he arrives.

Dillon Hunter • SG • Ypsi Prep 2022

A chiseled shooting guard that is capable of playing on or off the ball due to his ball skills, shooting ability and feel. He also moves well for his size and showed he can be a good two way player at the next level.

Shawn Phillips • C • Ypsi Prep • 2022

The big bodied man in the middle was trying to tear down the rim when he caught to ball deep in the paint. He is still working on his body to keep up with a fast pace game and more athletic player, but showed flashes of how good he can be once he works on getting in shape.

Juan Reyna • SG • Duncanville • 2021

Reyna is known for his shooting but yesterday the Alabama St. Commit was out to prove that he doesn’t back down from anyone and took the assignment of guarding a future Pro Prospect in Emon Bates. Reyna hands were active and he denied Emoni the ball as best as he could and when Bates had the ball he gave him little to no air space. Offensively he had a solid game and finished in double figures in the win.

Ronald Holland • PF • Duncanville • 2023

The Five-Star Sophomore Ronald Holland was the most dominant player on the floor yesterday and the Sophomore was a monster on the glass and rose above the rim for sky grazing dunks. His face up ability from the perimeter was also impressive to see from skill perspective.

CJ Ford • PG • Duncanville • 2022

The chiseled athletic point guard, did a tremendous job of operating his team and he ensured that the offense is ran properly and has made threes when I open while being equally as good on the defensive end.

Damon Nicholas • SF • Duncanville • 2021

Nicholas never hides or folds when the bright lights are on and against Ypsi the Sam Houston Commit did a little bit of everything and made some big time plays in the scoring department and showed his defens versatility by rebounding and guarding the 1-4.

Zhuric Phelps • PG • Duncanville • 2021

Phelps didn’t start off very hot but the skilled and crafty guard finished and made things happen when his team needed him the most. Phelps has a lot of tools at the guard spot and I believe that he is going to have a good College career at SMU.
